The Rajouri Times Report/Khan
Rajouri, Mar 16: Environmental organisation Compassion has expressed serious concern over the growing pollution in the Darhali River, particularly near the Darhali Pull area, where household waste is reportedly being dumped into the river.
Members of the organisation stated that the river is increasingly being polluted due to the disposal of domestic waste by households from nearby localities. According to them, the absence of a proper waste disposal mechanism in the area has forced many residents to throw garbage directly into the river, posing a serious environmental and public health risk.
The organisation alleged that the situation has worsened due to negligence and alleged corruption within the Municipal Council Rajouri (MCR). Activists claimed that a dustbin that had been installed near the site for nearly two decades was removed by individuals associated with the “adda parchi” system, allegedly with the support of a sanitary inspector of the municipal council.
According to the NGO, after the removal of the dustbin, a shed was constructed at the same spot. Later, a dumper load of mud was placed there, effectively blocking residents from disposing of waste on the roadside. As a result, people have reportedly started throwing garbage directly into the Darhali River, further aggravating pollution in the water body.
Members of Compassion said they have repeatedly raised the issue, but their concerns have not been addressed by the Municipal Council Rajouri so far.
The organisation has now made a strong appeal to the Deputy Commissioner of Rajouri to personally intervene and order a thorough inquiry into the matter. They urged the district administration to restore proper waste disposal facilities in the area and take strict action against those responsible for creating conditions that are leading to the pollution of the Darhali River.
Environmental activists warned that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, the continued dumping of waste into the river could lead to severe environmental damage and health hazards for residents living along its banks.
