Govt Assures Households of Steady LPG Supply Urges People Not to Panic Book Cylinders.

The Rajouri Times

New Delhi Mar 13: The government on Friday assured citizens that LPG supply across the country remains stable and households will continue to receive cylinders without disruption while urging people not to rush into panic booking.

Speaking to the media Sujata Sharma Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said domestic LPG production has increased by nearly 30 percent since March 5 to meet the rising demand.

She said there has been no shortage reported at any LPG dealership and people should book cylinders only according to their normal requirement. According to officials the recent surge in bookings appears to be driven by panic rather than actual shortage.

LPG bookings have increased to around 75.7 lakh compared to the usual average of about 55.7 lakh during the period before the conflict showing that many consumers rushed to secure extra cylinders.

The concern comes at a time when tensions in West Asia have disrupted global energy routes. The conflict escalated after strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28 followed by retaliatory attacks from Tehran.

Energy supplies have also been affected due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz a key maritime route between Iran and Oman that connects the Gulf region to the Arabian Sea and carries a significant portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.

India imports nearly 88 percent of its crude oil around 50 percent of its LNG and about 60 percent of its LPG needs with a large share normally passing through this strategic route making the situation in the region closely watched by energy planners.
