Rajouri, May 29, 2025: The Rajouri times
Today marks a truly historic and emotional day for the Pir Panjal region, as the first-ever batch of 100 MBBS doctors proudly graduated from Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri. This moment isn’t just a statistic—it’s a powerful symbol of hope, growth, and a brighter future for healthcare and education across Jammu & Kashmir. The achievement stands as a testament to the unwavering vision and commitment of leaders who poured their hearts and energy into bringing equitable development to this region.

GMC Rajouri’s story began as part of an ambitious initiative launched during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, under the wise and compassionate stewardship of then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. The creation of this vital institution was made possible by the tireless efforts of former Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad Saab, whose dream was to bridge the healthcare gap in remote and underserved areas like Pir Panjal.

On this momentous occasion, Shabir Ahmad Khan, former Minister and senior Congress leader from the region—who played a key role in making GMC Rajouri a reality—addressed the media and the community. His words were filled with heartfelt gratitude for the Congress leadership and their steadfast dedication to inclusive, forward-thinking policies.

“This isn’t just about the graduation of a medical class,” Khan reflected warmly. “It’s the fulfillment of a dream cherished by the people of Rajouri and the entire Pir Panjal belt. My deepest thanks go to Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, Ghulam Nabi Azad Saab, and all the senior Congress leaders who believed in our youth and recognized the urgent need for quality healthcare in our far-flung areas.”

Khan’s appreciation was especially directed toward UPA Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji, whose leadership he described as “visionary, compassionate, and inclusive.” He emphasized that her unwavering support played a crucial role in ensuring that transformative projects like GMC Rajouri received the attention and resources they deserved.

“Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji’s deep commitment to uplifting the underprivileged and her focus on fair development helped breathe life into institutions like GMC Rajouri,” Khan remarked. “Her constant encouragement to leaders working on the ground has empowered regions like ours. The joy we feel today, watching our youth step into the noble profession of medicine, is a direct result of her vision.”

Khan also took a moment to praise the faculty, medical professionals, administrative staff, and the students themselves. Their shared dedication and resilience, he noted, have brought the college to this proud milestone. For him, the graduation of the first batch is not just the end of an academic chapter, but the beginning of a lifelong mission to serve humanity.

“These 100 young doctors are our hope for the future,” Khan said with pride. “They will serve not only the entire Union Territory, but the nation as well, carrying with them the values of service, compassion, and professionalism.”

He didn’t forget to acknowledge the many departments and local stakeholders whose support has been vital to GMC Rajouri’s growth. Khan stressed the ongoing need for government backing to ensure the college’s continued expansion, modernization, and pursuit of excellence.

The establishment of GMC Rajouri has opened doors to medical education for students from remote districts and has significantly strengthened healthcare delivery in the region. Today, the institution shines as a beacon of progress, demonstrating how visionary policies, when paired with strong political will, can truly transform lives.

As the first batch of doctors steps out into the world, the people of Rajouri are celebrating not just a professional achievement, but a collective victory born from perseverance, inspired leadership, and the spirit of inclusive governance.
