Rajouri , Jammu & Kashmir – May 9, 2025(The Rajouri Times) The Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir has been severely affected by ongoing cross-border hostilities between India and Pakistan, resulting in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction In the early hours of Friday, May 9, Pakistani forces initiated heavy shelling in the Loran and Mendhar sectors of Poonch, leading to the death of one civilian and injuries to at least three others, including a woman. This incident follows a series of aggressive actions over the past week, during which Pakistani shelling has claimed the lives of 15 civilians, including children, and injured 43 others in Poonch district alone. The escalation is part of a broader conflict ignited by India’s launch of “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan. In retaliation, Pakistan has conducted drone and missile attacks across various Indian regions, including Jammu and Kashmir. India reports having intercepted multiple Pakistani drones and missiles, with the S-400 missile defense system playing a crucial role in neutralizing these threats. The continuous shelling has devastated civilian areas in Poonch, destroying homes, schools, and places of worship. Residents report a pervasive sense of fear and helplessness, with many stating there is “nowhere to run” from the relentless attacks. The local administration has initiated evacuation efforts for border villages, but the scale of displacement and damage has overwhelmed available resources. In response to the escalating tensions, Indian authorities have enforced blackouts in border areas, including Poonch and Rajouri, to prevent further casualties and maintain operational security. Additionally, all shops and restaurants in nearby regions have been ordered to close by 7 PM, with medical shops being the exception, to ensure public safety. The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict, urging both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further loss of life and maintain regional stability.
