Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt late Wednesday evening when a gunshot was fired at him during a private wedding function in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred while Dr. Abdullah was interacting with guests at the ceremony. A man reportedly managed to come dangerously close and fired a shot from point-blank range. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit the veteran leader, and he remained unharmed. Security personnel present at the venue quickly intervened and overpowered the suspect, who has since been taken into police custody.
Eyewitness accounts and a video circulating on social media suggest that the attacker approached from behind and discharged the firearm near Dr. Abdullah’s ear. Officials have yet to issue a detailed statement, and a full investigation into the security breach is expected.
Reacting to the shocking incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed relief that his father was safe. In a post on social media, he stated that the incident raised serious questions about how an armed individual managed to get so close despite Z+ security arrangements.
Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who was also present at the wedding along with advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, described the episode as a major security lapse and called for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances that allowed the attacker to enter the venue with a weapon.
The Rajouri Times has strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep concern over the safety of public representatives. The publication prayed for the continued well-being of Dr. Farooq Abdullah and urged authorities to ensure that such lapses are not repeated.
Former member of the Pahari Advisory Board, Bashir Ahmed Bhat, also expressed shock over the attack and thanked Almighty Allah for protecting the senior leader. He called upon security agencies to conduct a transparent investigation and strengthen safety measures for public figures.
Former councilor Sanjay Sharma termed the incident “deeply disturbing” and said violence has no place in a democratic society. He urged law enforcement agencies to take strict action against the accused and ensure justice.
Political leaders and citizens across Jammu and Kashmir have expressed relief that Dr. Abdullah escaped unharmed, while also demanding accountability and improved security arrangements to prevent such incidents in the future.
