Compassion AWO Leads Charge to Manage Stray Dog Population in Rajouri

RAJOURI, JAMMU & KASHMIR – In the bustling streets and outskirts of Rajouri, stray dogs are a familiar sight. For these animals, survival is a daily gamble against hunger, harsh weather, and the threat of mistreatment. However, local NGO Compassion AWO is working to change that narrative through a dedicated mission of care and population control.

Based in the heart of Rajouri, the organization currently feeds approximately 200 stray dogs  across various sectors and outskirts of the town. Beyond street feeding, they provide a sanctuary for another 120 dogs at a nearby safe house, ensuring they have a roof and medical attention. By focusing on sustainable population management, the group aims to reduce the number of strays in Jammu & Kashmir in a way that respects animal welfare. “Our neutering programme is aimed at reducing the stray dog population in Rajouri in a humane and sustainable way,” said the vice-president of Compassion AWO. “By neutering dogs within these communities, we can help prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and reduce the likelihood of them being caught or harmed.”

The NGO works closely with independent rescuers to identify high-density areas where neutering can have the greatest impact. Their strategy prioritizes females, as they are central to the breeding cycle. The logistics of such an operation are significant. On average, the cost for a female dog is approximately ₹4,500 to ₹5,000, which covers: Tick prevention and basic medication and Anti-rabies vaccination

Compassion AWO has seen a steady increase in its capacity to serve the Rajouri district in  Year 2023 Dogs Neutered  117 , in  2024   it was 133 while  in 2025 202 now  in 2026 Target of  250 – 350 dogs has been set.
To meet their ambitious goals for 2026, Compassion AWO is reaching out to the local business community in area . They are inviting companies to support the neutering program as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Individual donations from the public are also being sought to help cover the rising costs of veterinary supplies and feed.

As Rajouri continues to grow, Compassion AWO remains committed to ensuring that the town’s animal inhabitants are treated with the dignity and care they deserve.
