Jammu/Rajouri, April 27: (Abrar Mughal )
A wave of tragic suicides among young students has raised alarm bells in Rajouri and Jammu, prompting urgent calls for immediate mental health interventions. In a deeply distressing incident today, a second-year MBBS student at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu was found dead in his hostel room under suspected suicide circumstances.
This tragic case adds to a series of six suicides reported recently from Rajouri city, all involving Class 9 students, leaving families, educators, and the wider community in deep shock and mourning.
Prominent counselor and mental health activist Sajad Bhat from Rajouri has expressed serious concern over the growing crisis. Speaking to media, Bhat emphasized that the absence of mental health education, awareness, and lack of proper counselling support for students is a major contributor to these heartbreaking incidents.
“Young minds are facing extreme pressure without the necessary support systems,” Sajad Bhat said. “There is a desperate need for structured mental health education and regular counselling in schools and colleges. It’s time the Department of School Education and higher institutions take this seriously before more lives are lost.”
He urged the Director School Education (DSE) Jammu to immediately activate and utilize the Counselling Cell within the Education Department, ensuring professional counselors reach out to students across schools and colleges, especially in vulnerable districts like Rajouri.
Known for his outstanding counselling work in Rajouri district, Sajad Bhat has repeatedly advocated for the introduction of mental wellness programs at the school level. His call is now being echoed by concerned citizens, socio-political figures, and educationists alike, all appealing to the DSE to take swift action.“Timely intervention can save lives. We must recognize mental health as a critical component of education,” added a local socio-political leader while supporting Bhat’s appeal. The community strongly believes that with proper counselling, mental health workshops, and emotional support systems, such tragic incidents can be prevented. Immediate and coordinated action by the authorities is now being seen as the urgent need of the hour.
