Rajouri (Aroof Khan ) The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) is once again in the spotlight for errors in board exam papers, as students continue to raise concerns over out-of-syllabus questions in multiple subjects.
After similar issues in Class 10 English, Urdu, and Social Studies papers, Class 11 students have now reported three out-of-syllabus questions in their Mathematics exam held on February 25. These questions, carrying a total of 16 marks, were from topics removed after syllabus rationalization. The affected topics include the Polar Form of Complex Numbers, Solutions of Trigonometric Equations, and Arithmetic Progressions.
Frustrated students expressed their disappointment, questioning why JKBOSE continues to include removed topics in exams. “If these topics were taken out, why are they still in the paper? These repeated mistakes are unfair and affect our results,” said a concerned student. This isn’t the first instance of such errors this exam season. On February 24, the Class 10 English paper included a five-mark question from ‘Speak Up,’ a poem that had been officially removed from the syllabus.Earlier, on February 20, students appearing for the Class 10 Urdu exam found that options 2 and 3 of Question No. 10, worth five marks, were from a deleted section.Additionally, on February 18, students taking the Class 10 Social Studies exam encountered a multiple-choice question (MCQ) with incorrect answer options. The question, “Who was the first President of the Indian National Congress?” did not have the correct answer listed. The provided options—A.O. Hume, Mahatma Gandhi, S.N. Banerjee, and Lala Lajpat Rai—were all incorrect, as the actual answer is Womesh Chandra Banerjee.
Responding to the growing outrage, JKBOSE Joint Secretary Suraj Rathore told news agency JKNS that a committee of experts has been set up to examine the errors. He assured students that grace marks would be awarded where necessary.“Yes, we have formed a committee to identify and address these errors. We will ensure that students do not suffer due to these mistakes,” Rathore said. He also mentioned that an official notification on center sequencing would be released soon. These exam errors come amid broader concerns about JKBOSE’s functioning. The board has already faced criticism for delays in issuing admit cards, which caused panic among students just before exams. Additionally, errors in textbooks, including misprinted content, have further raised doubts about the board’s efficiency. The uncertainty surrounding JKBOSE’s leadership adds to the turmoil. The board has been without a permanent chairperson since January 25, after the tenure of the previous head ended. A temporary one-month extension granted by the Jammu and Kashmir government expired on February 25, leaving the board in a leadership vacuum. With repeated controversies and no clear direction, students, parents, and educators are now demanding urgent reforms in JKBOSE to restore confidence in the education system.
